What is a Consultant?
Consultants, also called management analysts by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), are responsible for helping companies and organizations improve efficiency. They help managers find ways to make their organizations more profitable through cost reduction and revenue-increasing initiatives. Those who work as consultants may work as generalists or specialize in a single area such as finance, human resources or training programs.
Responsibilities of Consulstants
Although a consultant’s responsibilities may vary depending on the employer, common ones include:
- Collecting and organizing information about problems and procedures within an organization
- Interviewing personnel and conducting onsite observations to determine potential courses of action
- Analyzing data like revenue, expenditure and employment reports
- Developing and recommending new solutions to problems
- Work alongside managers to ensure viability of new procedural changes
Some consultants work for the same organizations they analyze. Others work for agencies. However, the vast majority of these professionals work on a contractual basis. To be successful, consultants must possess excellent analytical skills, as well as proficiencies in communication, problem-solving and time management. These individuals most often work in professional, scientific and technical services.

With a desire for increased efficiency in their operations, consultant jobs are on the rise. BLS estimates that consultant jobs are expected to grow 14 percent by 2026 — a rate considered faster than average. The median annual wage for this profession is $82,450. However, those in the top 10 percent earn more than $152,210.
Consulting firms look for prospective consultants who have earned at least a bachelor’s degree in a business-related major, such as business administration or organizational leadership. Although not required, a graduate degree like a master of business administration, can provide a competitive edge. To further boost job prospects, candidates may also gain credentials from the Institute for Management Consultants (IMC USA). Certifications from the IMC must be renewed every three years.
