Master of Education in Literacy Education

Southeastern’s Master of Education in Literacy Education degree is designed for classroom teachers. While enrolled, students develop collegial relationships with other Christ-minded educators as they advance their knowledge of literacy. This course of study will prepare you for certification in literacy education so that you can advance your career in K–12 public/private schools as well as private reading clinics. The MEd in literacy education prepares Florida teachers to take the Reading K–12 Subject Area Exam of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination.

Program Outcomes

As part of this degree program, you will receive instruction in the following forms:

  • Foundational methods of teaching reading
  • Reading assessments (screening, monitoring, and diagnosis)
  • Instruction and intervention
  • Reading and learning in the content areas
  • Management of reading programs
  • Best practices in language arts

Total Credits: 36 hours
Program Length: 18 to 24 months; full-time (9 credit hours per semester) or part-time (3 to 6 credit hours per semester)

Tuition: $375 per credit hour

Admission Requirements

  • Completed application
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university (official transcripts required)
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 or completion of three successful years of teaching experience, or an official GRE score of at least 300 on the Verbal and Quantitative sections and a 4.0 or higher on the Analytical Writing section (scores must be within the last five years); if you took the GRE prior to August, 2011, the combined score must be at least 1,000 on the Verbal and Quantitative sections.
  • For non-native English speakers, a current TOEFL score at the mean level or higher
  • An essay on the topic, “Why I want to pursue my master’s degree at Southeastern University”
  • Two references (professional and personal)
