Psychology is the study of the mind, and explores topics such as emotions, development and behavior. In an online Bachelor of Science in Psychology program, students learn about the various theories that explain normal behavior in different life cycles. Southeastern University’s undergraduate psychology program also integrates faith into these subjects. Graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue further education and careers in psychology or counseling. Here are five career possibilities in this field.

Clinical Therapist

Clinical therapy is one of the most common careers in psychology. Therapists treat mental disorders and emotional issues. They are responsible for assessing their clients’ needs; creating and implementing treatment plans; conducting individual, group and family counseling sessions; and preparing reports. Clinical therapists work in mental health clinics, hospitals, individual practices, and social work or outreach agencies. The job outlook for therapists and counselors is very good. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there will be 19 percent job growth by 2024.

There are two main kinds of counselors: a counseling psychologist and a mental health counselor. The main difference between the two is the amount of education needed to practice. A counseling psychologist must have a doctoral degree, licensing and certification based on state requirements. A mental health counselor may only need a master’s degree in psychology or social work as well as a license to practice.

Corporate Trainer/Manager

Psychology graduates may pursue a career like corporate training. Generally, training and development managers only need a bachelor’s degree. A corporate trainer’s main responsibility is to create and implement training programs that meet the needs of an organization’s staff and strategic plan. The average annual salary is $102,640, though this can vary according to industry.

Psychologists study cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behavior in people. They study these topics by observing, interpreting and recording how people relate to each other within different environments and varied influences. A psychologist needs either a Ph.D. in psychology or a Doctor of Psychology degree in order to become a psychologist. The average annual salary for a psychologist is $72,580.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental illnesses. Psychiatrists are able to prescribe medication for patients. The average annual salary for a psychiatrist is $245,673. Psychiatrists attend medical school, complete a residency in psychiatry and become board-certified in the specialty to practice.
