In a graduate theology program, students take courses like Theology and Ethics, Christianity and the World Religions, Philosophy and the Christian Faith, Old Testament and New Testament. The course work educates students in the different facets of theology in order to best prepare them for a variety of careers such as these.
A master’s degree in theology can lead to a number of different career opportunities. This includes:
- Church leadership
- Nonprofit leadership
- Theology and biblical studies
Missionaries use their knowledge of religion and theology to help spread the gospel in a God-honoring way. Missionaries go into different communities, observing the people, telling them about Jesus and baptizing those who become Christians. Missionaries often add a service component to their tenure in a community, such as building sustainable infrastructure, offering medical services or improving access to resources. Missionaries use their theological knowledge to have in-depth conversations with those who are interested in faith. International missionaries are expected to learn the language spoken in their community. Domestic missionaries are required to understand and respect the local culture.
Many people who study theology go into ministry. A master’s degree in theological studies prepares future ministers to use their understanding of God and scholarly subjects to impact others. Religious leaders aren’t necessarily confined to a church. Chaplains in the military or in health care organizations also help others with their faith through spiritual guidance.
Graduates of a master’s program in theological studies can go on to further their studies in a doctoral program. This can lead to a career as a professor of theology. Professors of theology and other religious educators teach philosophy, religion and theology. Professors in academia continue their scholarship and publish new work. Theology teachers at the secondary school level may not need a doctorate. Many private high schools have theology courses as part of their curriculum. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that the average salary of a private school teacher is $44,130. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average salary of a professor is $72,470.
Bible translators work on producing Bible translations in new languages to spread the Gospel to other peoples and nations. Translators must have an in-depth understanding of the Bible in order to properly translate it. A background in preaching and teaching helps translators to better understand the Bible and how to best communicate its concepts.
